SAN ANTONIO - There is a big event Saturday at Woodlawn Lake Park that will raise thousands of dollars for childhood cancer research. It's called the CureSearch Walk. "Team Jaxon" will be there - 143 people strong. They're walking on behalf of five-year-old Jaxon Davis who's battling brain cancer. His parents say he's a special boy, but what makes him exceptional is what he's doing to help other sick kids. News 4 WOAI's Delaine Mathieu has his story.
Little Jaxon Davis has always been a kid with a really big heart. In fact, before he was even born his parents called him "The Heart."
“The very first thing that really stuck with us was that even at six weeks in the ultrasound you could see his heart beating on the monitor,” remembers Jaxon’s mom Lenzie.
When Jaxon was only three, doctors found a tumor in his brain. It was a rare form of cancer. He underwent surgery to remove the tumor and then seven months of intense radiation therapy.
“He's always been a real great fighter through all this,” explained Jaxon’s dad Cory.
His spirits were good, but the news was not.
“We found out at his first post-treatment MRI that there was two tumors -- that they had come back, and they were both just as big as the first,” said Lenzie.
His parents say the one thing that has always kept Jaxon positive during his darkest days -- the other sick children with him in the hospital. Their smiles made him smile.
“This is just such a dream for him -- is just to make other kids smile that are going through difficult times,” said Lenzie.
So he decided to start raising money to buy them toys. He sold yellow rubber bracelets and raised a thousand dollars, and recently a friend of the family held an event that raised $11,000.
“It's like 5k worth of toys, and it beyond fills up the bed of a pick up truck,” said Lenzie.
While the toys are piling up, Jaxon's battle with his cancer continues. In June, he was given weeks to live, but he's still here. Beating the odds.
“He's chosen to instead of sit around and dwell or feel sorry for himself, he's chosen to focus that energy on helping others,” said Lenzie. “And I think that's a lesson for all of us.”
The Cure Search Walk is this Saturday at 10am at Woodlawn Lake Park. Registration begins at 9am.
