AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A study says 60 public school districts across Texas now offer courses on the Bible. But at least a third aren't meeting state requirements to be unbiased and academically and legally sound.

Written by Southern Methodist University Professor Mark Chancey, the study found that many districts' courses favor conservative Protestant interpretations of the Bible.

Many also present "problematic treatment of Judaism" and promote "pseudo-scholarship" on science and U.S. history.

Chancey presented the study Wednesday. He completed it for the Texas Freedom Network, which monitors the State Board of Education from a progressive perspective.

Statewide, 57 districts and three charter schools offered elective courses on the Bible during the 2011-2012 school year.

Chancey listed 11 of them as having the most-successful classes, but concluded that 20 were the "most problematic courses."

@Luigi, there are a lot of stories out there that don't get covered on WOAI that I feel readers of this site should be made aware of. This is one of those, and because it's related to education, I chose both active education related stories on WOAI to post my link. Now, did you check it out? Do you disagree that teaching "white privalege" is a biased and racially based curriculum? I find it truly appalling. Now, did you check out Brooks? I don't live in San Antonio, or even close enough to be familiar with certain aspects of the city. I live out on a ranch out in the boonies west of San Antonio.

How is it possible to be academically sound about a book of stories that stir so much furvor in the general population. Shouldn't it be approached the same way as other British; English Literature classes as well as lessons on other other ancient writings. I do remember when my college professors tried to push their ideals and agendas (from all paarties/angles) on our classes. Smart students have to see through this and remember what G.I. Joe says: Knowing is half the battle. .....yes.

My son is a atheist and I am so glad his friends talked him into going to bible study after school at his school. I couldn't talk him into going to church.

The story says that the content is often skewed to favor a conservative Protestant interpretation of the Bible. This is why we should not teach religion in public schools. I am an Episcopalian and do not want my kids being indoctrinated by religious fundaMENTALists. Keep religion in church and education in the school systems.
