SAN ANTONIO -- It's a bizarre story involving an instructor at John Jay High School and the mysterious death of a child nine years ago.
Officials at Northside Independent School District questioned 36-year-old Daniel Chapa, who is a soccer coach and social studies teacher at John Jay High, after learning a manuscript he wrote describes a father drowning his 2-year-old son in a bathtub.
Chapa's son Anthony reportedly died 9 years ago from Sandhoff disease, a genetic condition he had since birth, according to the medical examiner's office. A recent autopsy report obtained from the Bexar County Medical Examiner's office states the boy's body was exhumed last year and now lists his cause of death as homicide.
The autopsy indicates the skeletal remains did not show any evidence of injury. However, the medical examiner's report states "It is our opinion that Anthony John Blake Chapa, a 2-year-old male, died as a result of a drowning. This conclusion is based solely on the written confession of the decedent's father, in which he details how he drowned the decedent in a bathtub."
Chapa's lawyer says his client did not murder his son and that the manuscript is a fictional story he wrote years after his son's death.
Officials with Northside ISD have not seen the manuscript. Because of the allegations, however, they are investigating and have placed Chapa on paid administrative leave.
