SAN ANTONIO-- Teachers are having a tough time landing a new job, with districts cutting back and laying off instructors across the state. Now some educators are looking overseas for their next position.
Izamare Marcrum has been a teacher and administrator for two-and-a-half decades. However, after taking a break last August, she was unable to find another job.
"I applied to a bunch of different districts but with the budget cuts, a 25 year veteran is very expensive to go back into the classroom," she explained.
She spent Easter Sunday with her family, a tradition she'll have to miss for the next two years. She'll move to Abu Dhabi in August, where she will be teaching English through Teach Away. She won't return until the following July.
"I figured this was a great opportunity to try something new, be adventurous and work with teachers from all over the world. That alone is exciting," she said.
Teach Away reports a 20 percent increase in the number of applications from Texas Teachers in the last year. 634 have applied this year, nearly 300 just in April. The program places teachers around the world and pays between $1,500 and $10,000 a month. For more information, click
