San Antonio -- She survived a deadly car wreck involving a San Antonio Police sergeant. Now, Maria Rodriguez is just out of the hospital and in a lot of pain. Still, she took the time to speak News 4 WOAI about her injuries, her loss and her frustrations.
"It's like a dream. It's like a bad dream," Maria told us.
Maria Rodriguez's physical pain is hard to deal with. But her emotional pain is unbearable.
Rodriguez described her friendship with Rosita Davila, the driver, "We're like sisters. We grew up together. I use to help her take care of her kids and everything."
This past Saturday Maria and her close friend, Rosita Davila, were driving home. They were on Loop 1604 heading West near Stone Oak.
"I saw this car there. And it just, all of a sudden hit us," Rodriguez explained.
That car was a police unit driven by Sergeant Gabe Trevino. The 21-year police veteran told investigators on scene that Davila hit him first. But Maria says that's not what happened.
"No, the car hit us. I felt the impact on my side," she said.
Maria told us she'll never forget being stuck in the Jeep, unable to help her friend.
"I was calling her name out. Tell her to - wake up, wake up,” she remembered. “Trying to take the seat belt off. Trying anything. But I couldn't do it. I couldn't do it."
She doesn't have much to say to the man who was driving this police car - just one question. Why?
"I don't want an apology from him or anything. I just wish he would have helped us at least. He didn't even bother to help us," Maria Rodriguez said.
