SAN ANTONIO -- It is the fastest growing part of town, and it is known for terrible traffic jams.

If you drive on Loop 1604 on the Northwest Side, you are used to stop-and-go traffic and leaving extra early to get to work. There is a plan in the works, however, to make the commute easier.

The plan will be officially unveiled later this month, but News 4 WOAI's Leila Walsh got a look at it this week. It calls for a superstreet on Loop 1604, one that's similar to the plan for a superstreet on US-281.

People who travel along Loop 1604 between Braun Road and Highway 151 say traffic is a problem seven days a week. Officials are hoping the proposed superstreet will fix that problem. The biggest change with the superstreet is that no traffic will cross Loop 1604 at Shanefield and New Guilbeau. Drivers coming off those streets will only be able to turn right onto Loop 1604. If they need to go left, they will need to take a turnaround.

Supporters say the superstreet could cut travel times roughly in half.

"The superstreet concept is something that when I saw it, I jumped on it immediately, because it gives immediate relief," explained Bexar County Commissioner Paul Elizondo.

Elizondo pushed for a study of the plan which would also mean some improvements at Loop 1604 at Braun Road and Culebra.

The county is estimating changes to commute times down to the minute. For example, the afternoon drive from Bandera Road to Culebra Road would drop from fourteen minutes to just six.

Drivers News 4 WOAI talked with liked the idea but wondered about the cost. The county puts the price at $6.5 million and hopes to pay for it with federal stimulus money.

The county and the Metropolitan Planning Organization are expected to vote on the plan within the next month or so. If it is approved, some of the work at Braun Road would start in May. Officials say they could finish it all by August of next year.

News 4 WOAI also learned about a second project to help cut down on congestion in that area. The Texas Department of Transportation has plans for an underpass at Highway 151 and Loop 1604. Right now, no money has been set aside for that $21-million underpass, but TxDOT hopes to put the project up for bid in December of 2011.

So you are going to have to cut off 2 lanes of traffic, wait in line to u-turn (that will cause the left lane to back up; so you probably won't make it over in time to u-turn anyway) and then cut off two more lanes of traffic to get where you need to go. Sounds Super!! They should add "Fantastic" to the name of the elevators at the Tower of Americas so getting stuck in them for 8 hours won’t seem so bad.

why not build overpasses at Braun, guilbeau and schaenfield roads as they were intended? Then put in the superstreet plan for the stretch between 151 and hwy 90. If there was just a way to get the highway money put back into the fund, instead of stealing it for other non-transportation purposes by the state, it would be adequately funded.

www.morefor1604.com shows they are working on expanding 1604, that is good news too, it needs another lane on each side at least. the Alamo Regional Authority also has more plans for better merges, eventually

YAY! A "superstreet" that will take years and millions of dollars to build!

I live in the mess at 281 north and my outlook on these superstreets is #1) yes, it should help flow traffic a little better but #2) when you put the amount of traffic that is already there and then expect people to move all the way over to make the u-turn.... what I see is a bunch of folks getting experience doing the pit manuever.. these roads will cause a lot of wrecks..

Pfft. All you whiners who moved out there are the cause of the traffic. Here's a permanent fix that won't cost the taxpayers any money: don't move out there! There are plenty of other fine areas to live in that don't have that bee-hive of activity.

I agree with chadnutz 100%. To build overpasses at these intersections would be over $6 million each. A temporary fix is better than nothing right now. TxDOT does have plans to do it right, but that won't be done until after 281 has overpasses. They have a priority list. I also agree that getting the traffic through Braun faster will only make Babcock through IH-10 worse. From 151 through IH-10, Loop 1604 needs to be 4 lanes each direction. But agian TxDOT already has that on the books. It just takes money and 281 is a higher priority right now. Having driven both of these areas in rush hour, I tend to agree with their priorities even though fixing 1604 would benefit me more.

I like how everyone says finish the highway instead. It easy to say. 20 other places in town people are saying the same about their area. Do you guys know how much that will cost? We have a budget and things like that are planned years in advance. Yes it's not perfect, but right now it's this or nothing. I drive that way so I will take this for now.

It is very cheap and easy to add entrance lanes and turnarounds compared to three overpasses. The one problem that most people don't think about is if you free up a choke point here, you better how that you have enough flow down stream to make up for it. 1604 needs to be 3-4 lanes on the north side. Many of these people are trying to get to 1604 north between I10 and 281. Those areas are already congested. Flooding them with a higher rate of cars is going to shift the problem elsewhere. It is a stop in the right direction, however. I10 and 281 need to be 3-4 lanes for a few miles out of town. Help get the cars out!!

Hell YA ! Bring it on... whatever they decide on it's better than what I deal with twice a day 7 days a week !
