LONDON -- A study published in the International Journal of Psychology found that an overwhelming majority of parents in the United States use "instrumental lying" to help change their children's behavior.

Sean Coughlan with BBC News reports that the persuasion ranges from invoking the support of the tooth fairy to telling children they would go blind unless they ate particular vegetables.

Now I really feel guilty. So, on a Sunday afternoon, telling the kids to go outside because mommy and daddy are going to take a 'nap', was wrong? So far the kids seem perfectly normal but they roll their eyes a lot.

If you consider long switches, leather belts and huge iron skillet sized hands on my backside as behavior changes then my parent "instrumentaly lied" in abundance to change my behavior. If done correctly this type of behavior modification will straighten your child out like a piece of wire.

Yeah well, my Mom told me my ears would stick out if I kept putting my hair behind my ear, I would catch a cold if I went out with wet or damp hair, my knuckles would be huge if I kept popping my knuckles. It's just a way to change habits and I came out okay. Oh, and I don't have ears that stick out either and my knuckles are normal. These studies are a waste of money and the govenment is paying them to do it (using YOUR tax dollars). Gees it's no surprise that parents do that. As for believing in the "invisible sky fairy" and the tooth fairy and the Easter bunny and Santa. All that does is get the kids imagination going. I've never seen a kid that commited suicide because he found out the bunny tracks to his basket was done by Mom, not the Easter bunny. As for the Sky Fairy, that too is up to the person whether they want to believe or not. When you get to be an adult you can make your own decisions.

Yep. A lot of parents tell their children about an invisible sky fairy that will punish them for all eternity if the don't worship and obey him. That's the BIG lie.

That's not why I was told I'll go blind.
