Really??? Seriously??? People can beat each other up with fists and crap. Back packs and books as well. There are ways to sneak in alcohol without a water bottle. Seriously. If that kid had alcohol in her water bottle you would be able to smell it. Schools are to rule bound and uptight. Yes. I know that schools want to be safe and all but this is way to strict. Plus, what happened to health class and all and being taught how to stay hydrated??? Schools these days. Poor kid. Wonder what the doctor will say when they go to the office.

This is what happens when people become "rule-bound". Because of the actions of some bad actors all people are denied the right to do something. Now we need a doctor's prescription to carry water? What utter nonsense! Punish the people who use backpacks, water bottles, pens, pencils and such to assault others, but give the law-abiding ("rule minders") students a break and let them carry their books in backpacks, carry water or other non-alcoholic beverages in order to meet their needs (aren't we all cautioned to drink water during the long, hot days here in San Antonio?) and stop micromanaging absolutely everything.

Did WOAI ask to see the policy in the handbook? The schools can't just make things up as they go along. Parents READ THE HANDBOOK! You might be surprised at some of the rules.

@cosmo- That isn't allowed. I clarified the rules with my son because I know the school actually sells water bottles at lunch. Now, he doesn't go to Harris MS, the school this article is referencing, but he is in MS at NEISD. Yes, you can bring juice, water or a sports drink in your packed lunch. You may also purchase a water bottle at lunch. But it may NOT leave the cafeteria. All beverages are to be thrown away prior to entering the hallway. They are really starting to enforce it at his school. Looks like they are doing the same at Harris.

Here's an idea. Take the bottle empty, and fill it there.

The same effort this mother put forth complaining and calling the news could have been spent on contacting the doctor's office and simply getting a note.

Good point Deadly Ramon. Funny how when people talk about banning guns someone will say; "Knives kill, next they'll ban knives. Cars kill more people than anything else, the government will take those all too!!!" People just pick and choose their battles. How can you be against one form of basic rights being taken and not the other? I'm with you, the kids have backpacks and lockers to stash stuff in, what's the point of banning water bottles. The high school kids have cars to keep things in. As for using it as a weapon........ see my first point. ANYTHING can be used as a weapon. They still use a compass in Math class, it has a pointy end, so do scissors, I've seen pencils do some serious damage too. Maybe we should eliminate those. Water fountains are disgusting and full of germs. And in case anyone doesn't remember, it doesn't taste too great either. I just found out about this rule last week. My son is a 6th grader in NEISD. Never had a problem with him taking a water bottle until then. Maybe they are cracking down on it. They SHOULD be cracking down on REAL security. They haven't had a single lockdown drill at all this school year. These kids have no idea what to do if something were to happen. But, hey, make sure they don't bring in that water. Stay thirsty my friends.

REALLY? some of you think keeping a water bottle out of school will keep kids that want to drink from drinking. i wish i could of been your kid as your so out of touch i could have gotten away with anything. surely you just make those statements so it looks like you have something to say. didn't have water bottles when i was in school and we found plenty of other ways to get alcohol into school. scouts out yousound like a true obamamite. don't question stupid rules just go along with it cause the government says so

Stupid policy. Might as well ban backpacks because they might be used to carry contraband. Pockets, too. Getting up to use the water fountains is more time consuming and distracting than keeping a water bottle on hand. Don't punish everybody simply because a few people are unruly.

No kid here bring containers of soda/juice/tea (etc) in a brown bag lunch/snack? Even Sports drinks for after school sports/activities? Amazing!
