SAN ANTONIO -- The state has shut down a northwest side daycare facility amid allegations that a staff member fractured a child's arm and a special needs child was found wandering a busy street.
A nine-page letter details the reasons why the state denied The Enrichment Academy a permit. The facility is located on Eckhert Road, between Bandera and Huebner.
The state reports on May 2, a six-year-old with special needs left the playground unsupervised and was found walking on Eckhert Road during a busy time of day and passing drivers stopped to get him off the street. The child was not hurt. The letter also details an incident where a staff member allegedly used excessive force by picking up a three-year-old child off the floor, which fractured the child's arm. The state website reports the staff member was fired after the Sept. 4 incident.
The letter also goes on to mention 43 deficiencies inspectors found from April 23 to Nov. 9, 35 of which are considered "High" or "Medium-High" risk deficiencies. The letter says staffers were found to be providing inadequate supervision and were not maintaining health and safety practices on numerous occasions.
The state delivered the letter to Aparna Challapalli Nov. 26 and she was supposed to send a certified copy to all parents. The letter was also supposed to be posted by all public entrances at The Enrichment Academy, but it was not visible as of Thursday afternoon.
The Enrichment Academy can ask for an administrative review. News 4 WOAI was unable to contact Aparna Challapalli through email or phone calls and no one was at the facility on Thursday.
