TRENTON, NJ (NBC News Channel) -- There are fewer smiles to be found inside New Jersey Department of Motor Vehicle offices.

New rules prohibit "big smiles" in driver's license photos. Officials say the new rules are part of an effort to crack down on fraud and identity theft.

New facial recognition software designed to go through photo records to make sure that drivers are who they say they are can be thrown off by exaggerated smiles.

Eyeglasses are also forbidden in the photos.

Texas made me remove my glasses last time I got my license renewed, so it must be going on here too...

I put on my TIN HAT on these kinds of stories. Why do I need my facial recognized? And who is recognizing it and why?

Those of us that work for the state smile when we are asked for our papers, because we know that it must match the photograph.
