NEW YORK -- NBC News contributor Herb Weisbaum says cable subscribers are about to get "sneaky" fee on their bills.

Weisbaum says a federal rule change takes effect Monday that could eventually force you to rent more cable boxes. He says right now, most cable systems don't scramble the "basic tier" service which includes local broadcast stations, public, government and education channels, and you can plug into a digital set and get basic service without a set-top box. But that's about to change.

@littlelady +1 I’ve been using the converter box for over a year now and have been content with the signal and quality of the broadcasts. Know your consumer rights: The RIGHT to satisfaction of basic needs: To have access to basic essential goods and services; adequate food, clothing, shelter, health care, education and sanitation. Does not say Entertainment so when you pay for cable service, you are paying a luxury/want price and until everyone realizes the State of Texas is not going to implement policies that would affect the revenue they receive from cable/infomercials taxes. These companies are looking at the bottom line on their accounting statements and the increases and additional charges will continue to increase because these companies feel the public cannot live without 225 channels that broadcast infomercials ( the scams they subject us to because we pay them..lol SO please remember, everyone was offered a converter box SO use it (saved me $2100 a year) and exercise your right of choice! Consumer Bill of Rights: The Right to Safety; The Right to Be Informed; The Right to Choose; The Right to Be Heard; The right to satisfaction of basic needs; The right to redress; The right to consumer education; The right to a healthy environment;

What's really criminal is that you have to pay like $60 a month for tv cable service, then you also have to sit and watch 30 minutes of advertising for a one hour show. And if you try to channel surf to avoid the commercials, forget it. I've noticed they synchronize them now so the ads are shown at the exact same time on nearly every channel. DVR helps but you still have to fast forward through the advertising garbage. I may get rid of it eventually.

I cancelled my cable over six months ago as I didn't feel like I was watching it enough anyway to make the cost worth it. Funny thing is that when people hear I don't have cable or satelite they actually tease me saying I must "live under a rock" or call me a "hippie". Yeah well this hippie living under a rock saves like $100 a month not having it! I have an antenna that gets local stations and I have internet and movies. Plus without it I actually get out in the world and experience more. I take walks, eat out with friends...took up geocaching. You'd be surprised how much more you can get done without it.

Well the federal rule needs to go to the TV manufacture first to mandate that it is not cable ready as stated to the consumer. This is the horse pushing the wagon.

Gnaeus Pompeius...There's always a patrioteer who wants to vent his/her anger at government, god and the universe for all the evil we suffer. In the heart of my bottom I know it was Lennon and the Beatles and their drug culture the ones who got the world in such a bad shape. Oh...ladida!

WE have several sets in the house with only one on the box.If these guys do that fine ill just get a big UHF antenna for my other tvs in the house .I cant see paying extra money for these converters...And I may point out here that there are nights I can sit here and flip through the channels with out finding anything worth watching . Wheres the great customer service in that ?
