Tonight is your chance to react! The average household could be paying more for their electricity every month, as early as March.

CPS Energy recommended its board approve a 7.5% increase for electricity and gas users, and an 8.5% increase for gas users. But the actual effect on your bill would be closer to a 4.2% hike after discount programs offset utility costs. (Read Janet Kwak's story from January 25th for all the details.)

Tonight, the CPS Board of Trustees is holding a public meeting to hear from you. You've got to get there early to register to be heard.

When:   Monday, February 8, 2010
              5-6 p.m. - Registration
              6-8 p.m. - Public Meeting
Where:  Villita Assembly Building, 401 Villita St. (at S. Presa St.)

SAN ANTONIO -- CPS Energy wants to start charging their customers more to power their homes, and Monday night those customers will have a chance to speak their minds about the rate hike.

News 4 WOAI asked CPS Energy officials why the utility provider is asking for the rate increase and why customers may have to pay more. Those officials said they have kept the same electricity rates for the past 17 years, and they need the money to pay for their aging equipment.

If the city council agrees, CPS Energy customers will see about a 4% increase on their bill. The average effect will be about $6.00 a month per household.

Council members will decide on February 18th.
