SAN ANTONIO - Although you may have never seen her on TV, Selena Garza has been involved with your weather forecast here at News 4 WOAI since 1998. It's just now she decided to step in front of the camera.
Selena grew up right here in San Antonio and earned a BA in Communication from St. Mary's University.
Selena's primary responsibility is producing the weather portions of the newscasts. She specializes in the technology that weather folks use on air. As a weather guru she translates complex forecast computer models and Nexrad Doppler images into easy to understand weather graphics you see on TV and WOAI.com.
Working closely with her second family, John Gerard, Albert Flores, Steve Linscomb and Siobhain Anders, Selena thrives on making sure every piece of weather equipment is used to its fullest, giving the latest details as to what's going on right now and what you can expect in the future.
It is important to Selena to not only keep up with the latest and greatest in the meteorological industry, but to use technology to help viewers better understand how the weather affects them. So Selena works closely with computer technicians to create images that have never been seen before. We’re one of the few TV stations in the entire world to utilize this complex weather computer system called MAX.
Among her achievements, Selena was key in creating San Antonio's first local 24-hour weather channel - WeatherPlus. Now she makes sure you can get your latest weather forecast online, on the radio, through Weatherline, Twitter, Facebook, and, of course, in our newscasts.
"I want to display the forecast in a manner where it's something you see only in the movies,” explains Selena. “You not only get the forecast, but you get a clearer picture to help plan your day.”
Feel free to call or email Selena anytime you're planning an event, a wedding, a birthday party -- or even if you just want to know the forecast. She loves helping San Antonians plan their day around the weather.
Selena spends every minute of her spare time with husband Cary (where she gets the last name Garza). Selena's heritage is Chinese. Selena and Cary have two beautiful children, Logan and Brett. She spends most of her weekends at CYO games watching her daughter Logan play soccer, basketball and T-ball. If you ask her what’s her all time favorite thing to do, she’ll tell you watching scary movies with her husband.
You'll see Selena fill-in on air occasionally, especially during severe weather when we'll mic her up as she helps the weather team track the storms.
