NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - Heidi Proctor moved in with her parents after losing her job in Austin and now she is being laid off from her new job at the Scooter Store.

The company says it must restructure and streamline its operation because of changes to Medicare. The 220 employees laid off are from all areas of the company. Company spokesman Jim Zipp says they need to be more efficient and there are no further plans for workforce reduction.

Proctor said many workers hugged and cried after being told the news about lay offs.

"Someone comes up behind me and says get your purse and your cell phone. At that point, I knew that was it," she said.

She said it was somewhat humorous since it's the second time this year she has been affected by job cuts. Proctor is pouring through the severance package to check benefits since she has only been with the Scooter Store a short time. She hopes her brief tenure doesn't hurt her ability to find another job.

"Yeah, I was worried about that because it looks like you are a job hopper. What is wrong with you because you've been let go so many times," said Proctor.

The Scooter Store has been around since 1991 and has about 2100 employees across the country.

Maybe with less scooters being sold the aisles at H.E.B. and Wal-Mart will be a little safer.

Texas medicare carrier is a private insurance company, like any other 'big' business they do not want to spend money, even when a provider has legally earned it. The Texas carrier has caused grief and probaly some deaths because they intimidate the provider from giving doctor approved care, they have a 'doctor' in Dallas that will evaluate your loved one paper without see them in person and decide what minimal care they can approve if any. Ins.company have never cared for their clients, much less the poor and the elderly that can least fight them. I hope the fed investigates them for unlawfully withholding life saving care from those that had doctor approved care and treatment.
