SCHERTZ, Texas – Officials in this small town northeast of San Antonio are looking at over a dozen potential swine flu cases.
According to Schertz Mayor Hal Baldwin, there is now a third confirmed case of swine flu in the city. In addition to those three, there are seven other highly probable cases, plus another 20 specimens were sent to the CDC for testing.
On Saturday, Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City school officials closed all the schools in the district after the State Health Department ordered them shut down for at least one week.
Originally
it was announced that only Steele High School would shut down, but new illnesses prompted a district-wide closure. Because the Schertz-Cibolo district closed down, Universal City United Methodist Preschool also closed for week of April 27-May 1.
District cleaning schools
The Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District is conducting a major cleanup at each of their campuses.
Workers inside Byron P. Steele High School donned masks and gloves and began cleaning the school from top to bottom.
Custodians told News 4 WOAI they are using a heavy duty disinfectant to wipe down every classroom and common area in the district's 14 campuses. There are especially targeting desks, counter tops, door knobs and floors.
They are also changing air filters at each campus for the safety of students and staff. The cleaning is actually the second at Steele High School since last Thursday.
Workers said right now they are being proactive. They expect to be done cleaning up each campus late Monday or Tuesday afternoon.
