SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio police, CPS Energy and San Antonio Water System are warning of a fake inspector scam.
Investigators said at least 20 San Antonio residents were victimized since October by crooks pretending to be CPS and SAWS workers.
"We are concerned that as time goes on they will get more aggressive," replied SAPD Assistant Police Chief Jose Banales.
Police said the scam begins when a one suspect comes to the front door and impersonates a utilities worker. The suspect lures the elderly resident into the back yard, and a second suspect goes inside and steals valuables.
Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 dollar reward for anyone who has information leading to an arrest in these cases. Police described the thieves as three men, the oldest being 40 to 50 years old with grey hair. The other two suspects are between 30 and 45 years old, and one of them investigators said is bald. They have been seen in a white Ford Explorer with a ladder on the roof, in a tan or light colored truck and a silver or light colored older model van.
New Braunfels residents are also being cautioned about potential scam artists. Several customers contacted New Braunfels Utilities dispatch Monday, February 6th inquiring about someone who had knocked on their door claiming to be an NBU employee and requesting access to their homes.
"In both cases, the elderly homeowners denied access to their property and police were contacted, " said Gretchen Reuwer, NBU communications manager.
