SAN ANTONIO -- Police arrested a suspect in connection with a double shooting outside a North Side fitness center over the weekend.
The shooting happened Sunday night outside the Planet Fitness at Loop 410 and McCullough. Police said 27-year-old Yu Masaki shot 31-year-old Juan Escamilla and 21-year-old Margaret McCombs as they were leaving the club.
"The club was closing. They were leaving. He approached them when they were near the car, killed the male and then chased the female and shot her multiple times, " explained San Antonio Police Chief William McManus.
Escamilla, an employee at the gym, died at the scene. McCombs, who was a member at the club, was rushed to a hospital in critical but stable condition.
Chief McManus said a friend of McCombs told officials the suspect "was a wannabe boyfriend, and she was not interested."
Using gym membership records, investigators traced Masaki to an apartment complex in the 10300 block of Sahara and found his car in the parking lot. While waiting outside, officers spotted Masaki walking out of the apartment, carrying a television. Officers told him to put down the television and put up his hands. They said Masaki set down the television but refused to put up his hands. Chief McManus said the officers then saw Masaki reach for a gun in the waistband of his pants, and he and the officers got into a brief scuffle. The officers were able to subdue Masaki and take him into custody. Masaki appeared to have suffered some scrapes and bruises. The officers were not injured.
Chief McManus said in addition to charges of murder and attempted murder, Masaki will be charged with attempted assault on a police officer.
