SAN ANTONIO -- A San Antonio Water System employee is recovering after the utility truck the employee was driving careened off of Interstate 35 on the East Side Tuesday.

The accident happened around 11:00 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35, near Shipman and Hormel. News 4 WOAI was told the employee had a seizure. The truck went off the overpass and landed on several vehicles on the ground below the highway. A total of nine vehicles were involved in the crash. Six of those vehicles were reportedly totaled.

@twister2, no problem. Some truck drivers will not let their employers know or when the renew their CDL that they are diabetic for fear of losing the license. Imaging a truck driver hauling tons of material and then goes into a diabetic shock, it can have dire consequences. Most people that are diabetic usually take care of themselves by medication, insulin, etc. But, CDL drivers fear having their license revoked so, sometimes may not take any medication and suddenly it catches up with them and thus an accident. However, I will say that I am not 100% sure that truck drivers with diabetes can still have a CDL, maybe someone in the trucking industry can shed more light to this.

Thanks JoNoes. I obviously don't know much about diabetes either. I do know of a diabetic who badly injured his foot and didn't know it for a few minutes because he can't feel it.

@twister2, read my post carefully again. I never claimed to be a doctor but, I know of people (truck drivers) that have been denied a CDL due to their diabetes.

woai needs to get their story straight. there is no overpass north of splashtown. the driver ran off the highway jumped the curb and landed on one vehicle. the closest overpasses are on 35 north on salado creek and 35 south on att pkwy.

without reading the article you'd just think this is business as usual for SA drivers

Sounds like something you'd see in the Dukes of Hazard. I'm glad nobody was seriously injured. Jonoes, I'm curious, why shouldn't diabetics drive? Numbness?

@DrPhil, agreed or if he had a diabetic condition that the driver may have failed to tell his employer. I think diabetics are not allowed to have a CDL license and I think the truck he was driving requires one but, I could be wrong.

If it was an Epileptic seizure, he should not have been behind the wheel.
