SAN ANTONIO -- Deputy Jose Esquivel, 49, is out of the hospital after suffering a fracture to his left arm and bruising below his right shoulder where a bullet hit his protective vest.
He went to a house on Dublin place near Shaenfield Road on the Far West Side to arrest Juan Daniel Gonzales, Jr., 38, a wanted sex offender. Gonzales served time for the sexual assault of a 10-year-old boy.
The owner of the home, Jose Torres, and a woman in the house, Jennifer Wells, have been charged with harboring a fugitive. Torres and a tenant who did not want to be identified said they had no idea Gonzales was a wanted fugitive and sex offender.
"I did not know he had warrants out for him or that he was a sex offender," the tenant told us. "He would come and go and just recently started staying here."
Torres, who was cuffed and taken in for questioning because authorities said he was not helpful, claims he didn't get the chance to respond when authorities busted into his house.
