SAN ANTONIO - Some sad news for animal lovers today as the San Antonio Zoo mourns one of its own.

Zoo officials say a 46-year-old endangered White Rhino named Gertrude died Monday from chronic kidney failure due to her old age.

She first came to the zoo back in 1970. The staff says Gertrude's loss first came as a shock because she was beloved by so many.

“I just remember her as coming up to the bars, always letting you take care of her, always listening to where she was supposed to be and the keepers loved her because she was always easy to deal with,” remembered San Antonio Zoo director Steve McCusker. “She was just there and she was one of the real pets of the institution.”

The zoo still has one other White Rhino and they told News 4 WOAI they hope to bring in more in the future.

What a beautiful animal. Sad to hear it died of kidney failure.

The Rhino exhibits look so bleak and stark, usually just a dirt pit, like the elephant exhibit. Can't they make those a little nicer? At least it lived to a good old age.
