Bexar County is holding a Transportation Choices Forum Friday.

The half-day workshop will include discussions about population growth, traffic congestion, the lack of adequate transit, air quality, and gas prices and how to address those issues, including our choices for future transportation.

Discuss:  What do you think of the idea of San Antonio getting a light rail system?

Tuesday, Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Adkisson held a press conference to discuss the upcoming workshop.

One of the choices to be discussed is light rail. Although the public voted against light rail in 2000, Commissioner Adkisson believes light rail is still an option for the San Antonio/Bexar County area.

"Oh absolutely," said Adkisson. "I think most people, really, if they think back, realize it was a mistake not to pass it."

Adkisson sits on the board of the ASA Intermunicipal Commuter Rail District, which is checking out the possibility of installing a light rail system between San Antonio and Austin.

"If we don't do something to provide an array for choices, where people can provide lots of different ways for people to get from point A to point B, then we won't be competitive with other communities," explained Adkisson.

Light Rail really is a great system, people have to understand that with Light Rail development blossoms around these Rail Stations. Mockingbird Station one of the DART stations in Dallas, has Apartments, mixed Retail, and a movie theater, surrounding its Rail Station. Before the DART station opened, it was just parking lots and under valued land, other cities or suburbs around Dallas are anxiously waiting the to have a DART Rail Station. Light Rail really is the way to go, it will get more people who wouldn't normally ride the bus to ride public transit. We shouldn't make the same mistake we did a few years ago, we are lucky that we are being given another chance. With population increases as citizens of San Antonio, we needs to seriously consider the benefits of Light Rail and the economic development that will come along with it.

Everyone forgets that there is a cost associated with this. These things are not free. Taxes will be sought. People and businesses will be taxed. Businesses will pass on their increased taxes to the consumer. I am not opposed to this, I think it would be great. But does San Antonio have the tax base for this? Are the people willing to pay for this? I don't think so. Most of the tax rate elections for local school districts in San Antonio failed recently. These elections were for a small amount compared to what would be asked of citizens for a rail system. I don't see it happening.

Everyone likes these things as long as someone else rides them.

I support this idea.

Light rail? A monorail system, ala Walt Disney World, serving from downtown to the theme parks by way of the park and ride stations would be better both as a year around transport and as a TOURIST trap, and more cost effective too. Second phase could be to make a "looper" to take the place of the present busses. The third part would be to talk the Texas State Railway into operating a "Special" between downtown and Fiesta Texas, and make a real talking point for San Antonio
