NEW YORK (CNN) -- Controlling dreams has been a thing of fiction -- like in the film "inception" -- until now.
"
Sigmund" is an iPhone app created by a Harvard PhD student. It's designed to program your dreams.
You pull up the app before you go to bed for the night, and you choose from a list of about a thousand words, which are things that you would want to show up in your dreams. The words come in a number of different categories, like adventure, sports, and romance.
The app calculates what time you'll reach "rem" sleep -- when you're most likely to be dreaming -- and that's when a soft, female voice repeats your selected words over your iPhone's speaker.
It's based on a sleep study that found it was possible to alter participants' dreams about a third of the time.
The app costs 99-cents. Its creator hopes it will do more than just end nightmares.
His hope is that people can use it to try to visualize themselves doing well in a setting, like an athlete.
