The economic crisis could turn into a child abuse crisis.
Disturbing details are coming to light about how the poor economy is leading to more children being abused in San Antonio.
At ChildSafe, families get help dealing with child abuse, specifically, sexual abuse.
One of the rooms at ChildSafe is called the Teddy Bear Room. It's where children can feel safe before giving interviews to detectives. Lately, hundreds more children are coming to the room and rooms just like it.
In just the past 6 weeks, child abuses cases have doubled at ChildSafe.
"It's saddening more than anything else," said Lynda Alston of ChildSafe.
Alston said there is a direct correlation to the current difficult economic times.
"They're stressed," explained Alston. "They don't have work. They can't take care of the family. They may already have a drug addiction or other problems. They're going to turn more to controlling and hurting these children."
Not only is ChildSafe dealing with more cases, but people they've already helped now need even more assistance.
"Transportation needs with a gas card, or food or clothing, or paying for a month's rent, or utility bills. We try to do that," Alston told News 4.
But ChildSafe also says the well-being of the family is ultimately up to the parents.
"Count to 10 and walk away," Alston cautioned. "Try to get your bearings back. And know in all situations going on in the household, it is not the child's fault."
