SAN ANTONIO-- A man who barricaded himself inside a home on the South Side was shot and killed by police Monday.
According to San Antonio Police Chief Bill McManus, police received a call about a domestic situation involving a man and a woman at a house on Drury Lane, near Escalon, around 3:45 a.m. Monday. McManus said that when officers arrived, a man was in the house and refused to come out. The officers spotted what they believed was a rifle in his hands and called for SWAT.
SWAT officers set up around the house and were able to talk to the man. Chief McManus said that at one point it appeared the man was going to come out peacefully. A short time later, however, the man came out carrying a rifle and "rushed" the officers, McManus told News 4 San Antonio. The officers opened fire on the man, killing him.
McManus said it appears the man had assaulted his girlfriend earlier in the evening, and the two then concocted and carried out a plan to crash an SUV to try to explain her injuries. After the crash, she ran away and called police, and he went back into the house.
The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Police have not released the identity of the man but did confirm he is in law enforcement.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative duty in accordance with routine department procedure.
Nearby homes were evacuated during the standoff.
