BAYTOWN, Texas -- He's not a firefighter, but a police officer in this city took an oath to protect the public. He said that's why he jumped in to save a suspect from a burning van.

"The flames (were) coming inside the cabin," Baytown PD Officer Brian Parker said. "I could actually feel the heat on my arms as I tried to get him out."

Parker ran to get a fire extinguisher, and put the fire out just enough to break out a window. Moments earlier, he said the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Adan Quiroz, sped past him at over 100 miles an hour on Interstate 10 headed eastbound.

He didn't get far, just to the I-10 feeder road and Sheffield. Police said Quiroz flipped the Pontiac van, and was still belted in as it began to burn.

Police said Parker got him out in the nick of time. Quiroz was not hurt. Parker injured his ankle, but police said it was not serious.

Quiroz was charged with evading arrest and is due in court on Monday.
