SAN ANTONIO -- Police say an off-duty security guard shot his neighbor in what they are calling a case of road rage.
The shooting happened around 1:00 p.m. Wednesday on Utopia near Fairlawn Drive on the Southeast Side. Witnesses say the off-duty security guard was driving very fast down the 800 block of Utopia Street where he lives. They told police the 41-year-old victim was getting something from his truck and shouted and gestured to the man to slow down. The witnesses say the security guard then stopped his vehicle and pulled out a gun.
"Driver stops, gets out, fires a shot at him, and hits him in the head," explained San Antonio Police Chief Bill McManus. "He walks up to him and fires two more at him while he's on the ground."
The security guard then got back in his vehicle and drove off. A man who witnessed the shooting followed him and even rammed his car to try to stop him. But when the suspect fired a shot at him, the man turned around and called police.
The victim was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition.
After the shooting, the suspect walked into police headquarters and turned himself in to officers.
Residents say the suspect and victim both lived in the same neighborhood and did know each other.
