SAN ANTONIO -- Police say an off-duty security guard shot his neighbor in what they are calling a case of road rage.

The shooting happened around 1:00 p.m. Wednesday on Utopia near Fairlawn Drive on the Southeast Side. Witnesses say the off-duty security guard was driving very fast down the 800 block of Utopia Street where he lives. They told police the 41-year-old victim was getting something from his truck and shouted and gestured to the man to slow down. The witnesses say the security guard then stopped his vehicle and pulled out a gun.

"Driver stops, gets out, fires a shot at him, and hits him in the head," explained San Antonio Police Chief Bill McManus. "He walks up to him and fires two more at him while he's on the ground."

The security guard then got back in his vehicle and drove off. A man who witnessed the shooting followed him and even rammed his car to try to stop him. But when the suspect fired a shot at him, the man turned around and called police.

The victim was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition.

After the shooting, the suspect walked into police headquarters and turned himself in to officers.

Residents say the suspect and victim both lived in the same neighborhood and did know each other.

No, @Phrilly…we don’t need gun control. People need to learn SELF control. The idiot shooter could just as easily run over him with his truck…do you advocate banning trucks? Yes, @scandals, I’m with you. And WRT going back to riding horses, @Topez, I guarantee that the death rate in Texas from vehicles far exceeds the death rate from guns, so I say YES! Let’s ban all motorized vehicles in Texas, and give everyone a gun. @WARRIOR666…well said! Finally, @yonkers, thank you for focusing this back on the individuals involved. I shall, indeed, keep the victim and his family in my prayers.

Our prayers go out to the victim and his family. The shooter was a ticking time bomb waiting to go off. Someone should check is 1990's work record. It is said he often threatened to shoot co-workers. Too bad nothing could be done about him back then. Maybe there would not be a young man fighting for his life right now.

Does anyone else feel like they've stepped into some warped version of the Old West?? I get this feeling ever increasingly with all the guns and shoot em' ups. Why don't we all just go back to riding horses and really give anyone outside of our beloved state the stereotype they all have for real. Is it any wonder we look like complete idiots to the rest of the US? Whether road rage or pent up racial anger...just breathe, everyone. Not everything needs to be settled with a bullet.

This man is trusted with a security job and he pulls this? REALLY? How is it that people who are clearly in the wrong think they can KILL someone who rightfully calls them on the wrong???

Give barney fife the rent a cop a gun and he's just gotta use it. Guess he had a bad day patrolling the Walmart parking lot. Where he's going he'll wish he had slowed down and waved at his neighbor.
