SAN ANTONIO -- It’s a bug creeping into your computer – without you even knowing it.
A new virus is going around that allows pedophiles to store child porn on your hard drive.
“It’s a virus unlike any other virus out there,” says Robert Garcia. He’s a technician with Best Buy’s Geek Squad, a computer doctor, if you will. “If you go to Web sites to download illegal music, even porn, what the virus does is it waits until you’re inactive on the computer, and downloads itself.”
And as long as your computer is online, criminals can access child porn sites and download pictures and videos on your PC or laptop. Experts say people who download music or movies illegally, or use peer-to-peer applications like Limewire are most at risk.
One man in Massachusetts reported his computer was programmed to download 40 child porn sites every minute.
The best advice to protect yourself is to update your security and anti-virus software frequently. Scan your computer at least once a week, use parental control settings with your children's computers, and just use common sense.
Oscar Unger, a computer user, states it best: “You have to be careful of what you do on the Internet.”
