WASHINGTON (AP) -- The nation's largest gun-rights lobby called Friday for armed police officers to be posted in every American school to stop the next killer "waiting in the wings."

The National Rifle Association broke its silence on last week's shooting rampage at a Connecticut elementary school that left 26 children and staff dead.

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," the group's top lobbyist, Wayne LaPierre, said at a Washington news conference.

LaPierre said "the next Adam Lanza," the man responsible for last week's mayhem, is planning an attack on another school.

"How many more copycats are waiting in the wings for their moment of fame from a national media machine that rewards them with wall-to-wall attention and a sense of identity that they crave, while provoking others to try to make their mark," LaPierre said. "A dozen more killers, a hundred more? How can we possibly even guess how many, given our nation's refusal to create an active national database of the mentally ill?"

He blamed video games, movies and music videos for exposing children to a violent culture day in and day out. "In a race to the bottom, many conglomerates compete with one another to shock, violate, and offend every standard of civilized society, by bringing an even more toxic mix of reckless behavior and criminal cruelty right into our homes," LaPierre said.

He refused to take any questions after speaking. Though security was tight, two protesters were able to interrupt LaPierre's speech, holding up signs that blamed the NRA for killing children. Both were escorted out, shouting that guns in schools are not the answer.

LaPierre announced that former Rep. Asa Hutchison, R-Ark., will lead an NRA program that will develop a model security plan for schools that relies on armed volunteers.

The 4.3 million-member NRA largely disappeared from public debate after the shootings in Newtown, Conn., choosing atypical silence as a strategy as the nation sought answers after the rampage. The NRA temporarily took down its Facebook page and kept quiet on Twitter.

Since the slayings, President Barack Obama has demanded "real action, right now" against U.S. gun violence and called on the NRA to join the effort. Moving quickly after several congressional gun-rights supporters said they would consider new legislation to control firearms, the president said this week he wants proposals to reduce gun violence that he can take to Congress by January.

Obama has already asked Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 and pass legislation that would stop people from purchasing firearms from private sellers without a background check. Obama also has indicated he wants Congress to pursue the possibility of limiting high-capacity magazines.

While I agree that "feel good" legislation is inevitable (easier to attach laws to inanimate objects than to people), the one thing that has been missing and now does seem to be happening is a frank discussion about ACTION. I don't mean to sound flippy, but the solution(s) will only come about with compromise on both sides. > Armed guards in every school: Cost $60K a year, per school? Effectiveness, humanly questionable and subjective at best. Would it hurt? no > Limiting "clip" rounds (magazine capacity) and semiautomatic firearms? No real evidence that either will prevent a looney from attempting murder of innocents. Would it hurt or help? no to both. The only fact I have heard or seen to this point about mag capacity is that anything over 10 rounds will eventually jam. > "Assault weapon ban"? Defining an assault weapon will only lead to finger pointing by both sides (What IS an assault weapon?) and in the mean time no real curbs to violence. A bullet is just as deadly fired from a bolt action WWII era rifle as it is from a semi auto AR15. AND rate of fire (a.k.a. lead down range) is a nonsense rating invented by armories to impress sport shooters. If you need more than one shot to hit something (deer, coyote, etc.) you need to spend more time on a range practicing. What very few seem to want to discuss is a comprehensive program or process for dealing with debilitating mental illness. It's mental illness (temporary or longterm) that pushes the murderers to attack innocents. No doubt there is no magic bullet to "cure" mental issues, but there could be a desire. How much research money is raised by private citizens to combat breast cancer, or prostate cancer, or the myriad of other diseases that threaten our health and well being? Millions? Billions? Perhaps if we were to be concerned about mental health as we are about the rest of our bodies we might see a change. I'm not saying divert contributions, I'm saying ask for contributions. My 2 cents.

The LIBERALS in this country will NOT ACCEPT ANY SOLUTION...Thir ONLY goal is to Dis-arm this country...Criminals will ALWAYS be able to get guns, JUST LIKE DRUGS! We the People Will NOT dis-arm!! EVER! In Switzerland, EVERY HOUSE is REQUIRED to Have a Firearm, and they have the LOWEST CRIME RATE IN THE WORLD!!! Law-Abiding CITIZENS have HELPED MORE in these Mass shootings than ANY Law Enforcement Officers!!! And THAT is because the Police Cannot get there in time!! It is not the Polices' fault...Solution: ARM ALL LAW-ABIDING CITIZENS,against these THUGS!! Banning guns will ONLY make the Guns go "UNDERGROUND"!!!And te CRIMINALS WILL ALWAYS BE ABLE TO GET THEM....JUST LIKE DRUGS!!!

The way to take care of this problem, is to ARM the citizens. In all cases where a mass shooting has been stopped...WAS BECAUSE THERE WAS AN ARMED CITZEN that STOPPED the KILLING!

In the Conn. shooting, the MOTHER of the shooter KNEW her son was capable of being dangerous!! She KNOWINGLY put a weapon within her son's reach, therefore I think if she were alive, there would of been CHARGES brought against her. In this case, the PARENT was the GUILTY party....This MOTHER KNOWINGLY helped murder these innocent children. ALL the mass shootings have happened in GUN-FREE States!!! NOT in states that ALLOW guns!!!!

Two issues that will be agrued by my grandson's grandchildren are gun control and abortion - there will always be different views on these issues. IMO (without expressing my viewpoint on either)if either would be illegal they would still occur - Making them illegal will just make it harder to do - and harder to control and monitor them - Laws will not eliminate them.

There has been additional shooters around the country since this incident. Together with the arrests in San And Concealed carry on school campuses is wrong. A security office on campus is acceptable if expensive. The problem there would be the rules that tell him/her to take down a campus intruder before other lives are placed at risk. The Texas Legislature is attempting to do away with public schools anyway.
