Reba821 and GSDlady absolutely RIGHT ON! These working dogs want nothing more than to provide love to their care taker once they have been retired. Thank you for taking on the effort and most of all expense to ensure these dogs enjoy a quality of life. As for Dodie Lee, you are the sorriest excuse for a human being I've ever seen. To say that you are a total waste of flesh does not even come close to what you seem to think you represent. Who ever runs this board should deny any access to any comments section of this board. You have NOTHING constructive to say or add at any time!

My Son was a US Army MP K9 handler with an explosives detection dog "Rexo". They were both injured in Iraq in an IED explosion. Both are Soldiers, who received Purple Hearts. Both are now medically retired for injuries sustained in Combat. "Rexo" is a retired, wounded Combat Veteran. He deserves medical coverage to help with his care.

Sure! These hard working canines are much more deserving of our tax money than all the lazy welfare types. Dodie Lee: Do they give you your own computer at the State Hospital or do you have to share it with the other patients?

Passing this law would unfortunately probably result in more dogs being euthanized than adopted as it would be more cost effective for the government. When I adopted my retired MWD, I knew his situation and that the costs would be significant, but he deserved a forever home for as long as he lived. He enjoyed his retirement and my veterinary clinic helped immensely with the cost factor. Maybe if more veterinary clinics had that attitude towards retired MWDs and their owners, it would encourage people to adopt them for the right reasons and not just a MWD's "retirement" benefits. I'll adopt another MWD in the future because they deserve a safe, secure, and loving forever home even for a short time, and fortunately I don't need the monetary incentive to provide that.

Yes - After all they save lives and unlike humans they only have a few years of retirement to enjoy - retired at 8 or 9 and gone by 11 or 12.
