SAN ANTONIO -- Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller is encouraging all congregations within the San Antonio Archdiocese to stand against a new federal health care mandate.

The Archbishop has written a letter explaining the new health insurance policy, which he calls a threat to religious freedom, and instructed all pastors to read the letter at every mass this weekend. He also encourages Catholics to take a stand and contact their congressional leaders.

Under the mandate, all employers are required to cover contraception and abortion as part of preventative care. Both are against Catholic teachings.

Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius says the new mandate was made after careful consideration.

The policy goes into effect August 1. Religious organizations that don't provide contraceptive coverage based on religious beliefs will have an extra year to comply.

Where's WOAI's story about and coverage of Obama's comment at the Prayer Breakfast that "Jesus would want us to tax the rich"?!?!? And, where's the story and coverage about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg's State Department sponsored visit to Egypt and Tunisia where she praised the Arab Spring and told those listening that when they began to write their new Constitution to NOT follow the example of the Constitution of the United States because it's old & outdate & irrelevant in today's world and society?

Sure, coming from a "Priest" point of view-I don't think so. It does make sense that before these religious people begin to open their mouth, they need to make sure that ALL children are safe in the church. Let's start from there, then we can move on to real things that matter.

Hmmm... Contraception and abortion are legal. So is alcohol, tobacco and eating meat on Fridays. Citizens have a choice. If they object to it, they can abstain. However, they should not be required to fund or enforce it.

the issue isn't whether one chooses to use birth control or not, the issue is that the govt. does not have the right to force religous people or orginizations to provide for things (including health issues) that are contrary to their religous beliefs. If you want to use contraception or even get an abortion, that should be your choice, but you do not have the right to force someone else to pay for it. This is a slippery slop. You may not agree with the catholic church on this issue, but it sets a very unnerving precident and it is unconstitutional. Of course most people don't know the constitution...too bad! Today people of faith, tomorrow something you believe deeply in...rights are easily lost and almost never recovered once lost. One more thing...In this country you have the right to live an imoral life, but you do not have the right to ask someone else to pay for it, or the colateral damage that life brings!

it's great the Catholic church has the freedom to protest even if they don't get their way in the end, they should follow the laws. A lot of people don't really subscribe 100% to the Catholic church's teachings and that is probably the safety net the government is giving them, if a Catholic does subscribe 100% they won't have to use those services being offerred but if they don't agree with it and want to use birthcontrol that is very responsible. Even Jesus says what king goes into battle without considering the consequences and if they have enough supplies, same idea with parenting, if you can't afford kids emotionally and financially it is responsible to not have them, you don't have to live celibate though if you are married, too many pedophiles proves that isn't the best answer. in Mexican and S. American mines they worship some devil idol and then they go to catholic mass once a week, a lot of people don't follow the catholic church 100% and the catholic church needs to stop trying to be totalitarian dictators and accept people's freedom of choice and try to be responsible even if they are secular.

All the mandate is saying is that is your health insurance company, that you as an employee pay for, cannot deny coverage for birth control to you simply because your work place has a religous point of view against it. If a woman does not believe in birth control, they do not have to buy it. All this other "war on religon" nonsense is really on war on logic. Most health insurance companies covered Viagra WAY before they ever bothered to cover birth control. This is about not allowing health insurance companies or religious hospltals to discrimate against women with regards to birth control converage. If a woman does not believe in birth control. she does not have to buy it.
