SAN ANTONIO - A San Antonio police officer is recovering after he was nearly run down.

The incident occurred at a Valero gas station on Callaghan and Culebra on the city's west side. The officer was responding to a call about a fight around 1:45 A.M. When he arrived, he spotted two groups of people fighting, and tried to break it up. Some of the people involved got in their cars and tried to leave. That is when police say some of the cars nearly ran over the officer who was standing in the parking lot. The officer smashed the driver side window of one of the cars after he was hit in an attempt to get one of them to stop.

Other officers caught the driver not far from the site, near Ingram road. Five people in two cars have since been arrested. They are facing evading arrest and assaulting a peace officer charges.

The officer has been tended to and is in good condition.
