SAN ANTONIO -- Bexar County's sheriff is no longer allowing deputies to pick up off-duty hours at bars and nightclubs.

The sheriff believes situations at bars and nightclubs can get too out of control and are too much of a liability.

This comes after a man was killed by an off-duty sheriff's deputy during a shooting outside a bar on the North Side in January. The deputy was later cleared of any wrongdoing.

"We've got deputies working off-duty who don't normally have all the tools they would have on duty," explained Deputy Chief Dale Bennett. "So, it's an issue where we don't want to put the officer in and we also want to protect the county as a whole."

Under the new policy, off-duty deputies can not work security at businesses where 51% or more of their sales comes from alcohol. Working at restaurants, however, is allowed.

Bars and nightclubs will now need to hire armed and unarmed security companies instead.

Tigger, SAPD officers haven't been allowed to work bars in well over 10 plus years.

The sheriff is an idiot. These side jobs are what allows deputies to support their families - making $30K a year isn't CRAP for someone who puts their life on the line by placing a target, I mean a badge on their chest. The serving of alcohol is exactly what makes the presence of police officers necessary! Only a complete moron would say that the deputies don't have the tools of their jobs when they work off-duty sidejobs and then turn around and invite those companies to hire security guards. The sheriff is basically saying that security guards are more capable than his own deputies! Liability is a CROCK of S.H.I.T because the agency is not responsible for what a cop does off-duty; he is personally liable if he's not on the taxpayers' clock. I guess these deputies might need to think about getting hired on with SAPD because that's where all of these businesses are going to turn for protective services.

There's plenty of work where alcohol is not served for these guys (the entrepeneurial kind): protect shipments of coke/weed going through SA ( a common job); protect dealers during high risk meetings (less often, but more lucrative); Extort prostitutes and transvestis (very exciting). I guess it all goes in the end into protecting the vices.

Cat123, you got that right on the nose. most security guards won't know what to do in a sitiuation, when these armed, untrained security guards get into a confrontation they cant handle, they resort to their firearm. In that instance with lack of training, confidance or control of the situation, something bad will happen either to that guard or an innocent bystander. I've worked around and with a lot of security companies and guards and i've seen it first hand. Untrained or macho Security guards at a club where they will deal with intoxicated and unruley individuals on a nightly basis is not a good combination. Not all, but most, guard companies will not allow their guards to get involved with any activity that may be hazardous to themselves because of insurance regulations. But, there are a few that will at least assist or to a certain extent protect life and property of the business they are working. Most of that also dependes on the guard themselves as well. In my younger days, when i was young dumb and full of ***, i worked security at a local nudie bar. For about a week ! You wouldn't beleive the crap that went on at that place, both inside and outside, employees and customers, guns, drugs. I was smart enough to realize though that i wanted no part of it, I'll stick to Corporate opperations. But anyway, this is a bad decision.

Sheriff's deputies may not be able to do this but I haven't heard any word about off-duty SAPD. There has to be some way around depending on rent-a-cops. I'll stay home and drink if that's what this is going to come to.

Too bad the sheriff's dept can't moonlight in nightclubs anymore. I'm sure that extra money came in handy for them and their families. Hopefully these officers can pickup a moonlighting job somewhere else pretty quick.

Time to educate the stupid people...FYI only LICENSED Peace Officers are allowed to work security at bars and they are allowed to carry weapons, and protect the patrons of the bar. They are not there to drink, they are in uniform making sure the patrons are being safe. All "Jail Guards" are not licensed peace officers therefore they can't work these type of part times. Patrons were lucky to have these deputies on the premises to protect them, without them a lot more crap will go down. Don't you remember the 16yr old girl that got beaten & stomped on by another teenager at a subway station in another state because the security guards just stood by and watched? She went to them for protection and they did nothing, they allowed her to get beaten, even when she was down, they allowed the other girl to kick and stomp on her. If it was a Bexar County Deputy Sheriff believe me, they would have done somthing about it and not let an innocent person get pulped to almost death. Security guards can't do crap, they are there to observe and report. Lets see when you're at a bar minding your business and some stupid drunk person wants to start crap and threaten you, who will you run to then???? Maybe you'll be the next shooting victim.

I am in complete agreement with this new decision and it should have been made a long time ago. The public should not have to worry about whether or not deputies have been in a barroom drinking beer and fighting with unruly saloon patrons. Deputies are supposed to uphold the law and protect the community, not get involved with consorting with the trouble makers. The only time a deputy should go into a barroom is to arrest the people drinking beer in them and close them up. Those places are full of sin and sinners and they should all be closed up. Most of them are owned by criminals and some of them have dancing girls who show their teats for money. It is high time something was done about it.
