SAN ANTONIO -- Bexar County's sheriff is no longer allowing deputies to pick up off-duty hours at bars and nightclubs.

The sheriff believes situations at bars and nightclubs can get too out of control and are too much of a liability.

This comes after a man was killed by an off-duty sheriff's deputy during a shooting outside a bar on the North Side in January. The deputy was later cleared of any wrongdoing.

"We've got deputies working off-duty who don't normally have all the tools they would have on duty," explained Deputy Chief Dale Bennett. "So, it's an issue where we don't want to put the officer in and we also want to protect the county as a whole."

Under the new policy, off-duty deputies can not work security at businesses where 51% or more of their sales comes from alcohol. Working at restaurants, however, is allowed.

Bars and nightclubs will now need to hire armed and unarmed security companies instead.
