SAN ANTONIO - The Bexar County budget is getting tighter and local non-profits are feeling the squeeze. 19 organizations will be getting 20 percent less money this year.

One of those is the Seton Home, which houses pregnant teens and new moms. The home provides free child care so the girls can get their diplomas and get a steady job. However, director Margaret Starkey says this year, they're helping more mothers who already have children. They had to hire more day care staffers to take care of the extra children.

Starkey says she learned Wednesday they would be getting $6,000 less from the county, even though they had asked for $10,000 more to pay for the extra day care employees. She worries they may have to cut back on that program, now that they've lost that funding.

Starkey says fundraising is still difficult these days because of the economy. However, she says they will try to find another grant to cover the shortfall.

Several other agencies that will be losing funding from the county include the YWCA of San Antonio, the San Antonio Food Bank and Catholic Charities.

@sadvdfest981 @ita41340 @ipinsatx You all have very valid, refreshing posts. I too have witnessed much abuse of publicly-funded healthcare. Take a cruise through the parking lots of San Antonio's several Federally Qualified Health Care Centers. New HUGE SUVs and Escalades...even cars with license plates from Coahuila. And those are just the patients!!

Why was our property tax money given to Catholic Charities? They help Illegal Aliens get established here in San Antonio. They enable our Sanctuary City status. And the Food Bank is part of the United Nations, United Way, which also gives food to Illegal Aliens. (Have to take care of the future Democrat voters). Now where is a list of all the organizations which receive donations (FROM THE COUNTY) aka (OUR TAX DOLLARS). Who chooses which ones get how much? Do Minority run non-profits get more than non-minority run? Which friends of which County Commissioners receive more than non friends. And then there is the giving to - potential voters or (political candidates or for party endorsements) conflict of interest thng... County residents would like to see the list and amount of donations.

It is unfortunate that it hurts the good Non-profits that are doing the right thing.

ipinsatx...thank you for saying what everyone already knew. You are refreshing. I have said in the past that anytime it is budget cutting time that the first thing they do is cut school crossing guards. And of course, parent are enflamed about this so at that point everyone is ok with raising taxes. (I believe we are smarter now) It is a good thing to cut non-profit agencies. It seems that if you know the system anyone can start a non-profit org. and take from it. Just like the senator from Texas who didn't know the black organization that gave out scholarship was not part of her checkbook to use. (give me a break). San Antonio is democrately run so spending money that is not yours is fun for them so they can get reelected. Our Federal Government does the same thing and we are just now learning the extense of who is getting the money and how they are spending it.

Good... Bexar County has a VERY Large Subculture that uses (abuses) the "System" as a Way of Life! I have personally witnessed flagrant abuse of both the Food Bank and Health Care by people with good paying jobs, nice homes and new cars. Of course, they take time off from work to do it and make it a regular social event. Often they complain about having to wait in line at the Food Bank or for more than an hour to get Health Care. Here are comments I have overheard: Why not, it is free... My taxes pay for it... My health insurance co-pay is too high... I am not on my boyfriend's health insurance... anybody can do it, you just need to know how!

Years back Jocelyn Elders was criticized for recommending that condoms be handed out at schools. Maybe that wasn't such a bad idea after all.

I'm sick of government taking from those that "do" and giving to those "who do not". It should be reserved for the Elder, Truly Handicapped, Infirmed and those furthering their education - temporarily...while maintaining a decent GPA. Not give it to a low life baby factory who will just do more of the same.

I think that they should get rid of many members of the Bexar County Sheriffs officers instead so that they stop wasting money on losers who abuse prostitutes, have DUIs & DWIs & kill people with their lack of driving skills, despite that fact that they should have received them long ago. Yes, I am aware that SAPD & BCSO are two different organizations, but it is not a far stretch to say that similar people are in both. I've seen many BCSO garbage running red lights and driving irresponsibly all over 281 on the North side. It's horrific. Plus, they would not run unfair speed traps on innocent individuals who were just unfortunate to drive where the speed limit is inappropriate or where the speed limit suddenly changed for no reason whatsoever.

Bexar County cutting funding to 19 non-profits! Are they doing this so that they can give a cost of living raise to city employees in the middle of a recession! Stop buying new police Camaros
