SAN ANTONIO - The Bexar County budget is getting tighter and local non-profits are feeling the squeeze. 19 organizations will be getting 20 percent less money this year.
One of those is the Seton Home, which houses pregnant teens and new moms. The home provides free child care so the girls can get their diplomas and get a steady job. However, director Margaret Starkey says this year, they're helping more mothers who already have children. They had to hire more day care staffers to take care of the extra children.
Starkey says she learned Wednesday they would be getting $6,000 less from the county, even though they had asked for $10,000 more to pay for the extra day care employees. She worries they may have to cut back on that program, now that they've lost that funding.
Starkey says fundraising is still difficult these days because of the economy. However, she says they will try to find another grant to cover the shortfall.
Several other agencies that will be losing funding from the county include the YWCA of San Antonio, the San Antonio Food Bank and Catholic Charities.
