SAN ANTONIO -- A Northeast Side neighborhood is still on watch after a man attacked and tried to kidnap a 12-year-old girl.

The girl's grandpa, Luis Villarreal, became emotional as he spoke to News 4 WOAI's Jacqueline Ortiz.

"We love her very much," said Villarreal.

Villarreal is still caught up in the 'what ifs' of what happened to his young granddaughter, including what if his granddaughter hadn't gotten away from her attacker.

The attack happened around 6:25 a.m. Monday. Bexar County Sheriff's deputies said the girl was walking to her school bus stop at Monte Cristo and Avila when she was attacked.

She told investigators an African American man jumped out from behind some bushes and covered her face with a towel. The little girl fought back, kicking and screaming, and managed to get away. However, she eventually collapsed in front of a neighbor's home.

"She was laying behind the truck, half of her body was on the side walk, the other half was on the grass," the neighbor told News 4 WOAI. "She was on her back when I found her."

The neighbor then called 911.

While the community remains on watch, Judson Independent School District has also called parents to alert them about the attempted kidnapping.

Luis Villarreal said from now on, he will be walking his granddaughter to the bus stop.

"From now on, I think I'm going to have to walk with her, protect her," added Villarreal. "That's all I...That's all I can say."

Before he covered the her face, the little girl saw that her attacker was wearing a gold dragon ring with squiggly lines on his left ring finger.

If you have information about this attack, please immediately call the Bexar County Sheriff's Office at 210-335-6084.

If people would look up their zip codes on the National Registered Sex Offender Database, they would have already been thinking twice about letting their kids walk unattended. I showed my UTSA student how many live right by there, students forget there is a lot of security at school compared to right outside the campus (mostly generalizing). if the car breaks down, I don't want her making stupid choices, she needs to be vigilant about her own safety, and other young people should learn that also, Chelsea King is another sad example of this day and age we live in, also the Michael Devlin story, it goes on and on

Well, I think that people might recognize someone who had that ring and would be willing to turn them in. That's why it was revealed.

Why did you reveal the ring? All he has to do is take it off, say he lost it. How stupid!

I hope someone reports the monkey that tried to commit this atrocity! In reference to the monkey comment, I simply mean that this individual is not evolved enough to comprehend right and wrong and is willing to simply submit to his primal instincts instead of being a human being and realizing that he should be a decent person and find a consenting adult if he wants THAT. UGH!!!! This is why I tend to avoid people. People used to be good and decent, now the majority of people nowadays are sick, demented, imbalanced, or just have no respect for others. Leave me alone, psychos! Follow the laws, respect other people, and use the 10 commandments as a guide to live your life (excluding God if you wish).

Well that's common sense - if there is an adult in the house, walk your child to the school bus stop or to school, especially this early. Dont' wait till something like this happens to your chid, which is any parents (most of them) most important treasures.

I would never let my granddaughter walk to the bus stop alone at 6 a.m.--heck not even at 6 p.m. !! There are too many nutcases out there to ever take that chance. Thank God that girl was able to avoid being kidnapped. No telling what could have happened.
