There's a huge distinction between the details of this story and the notion of arming Joe Q. Public as a safeguard, namely that the return fire was from an off-duty law enforcement officer AND employed in a security position. This person undergoes police training, whereas the average gun owner doesn't. I'm not opposed to private cun ownership but this is not an example that supports the claims in most of your comments.

The signs are "Its unlawful to carry..." which you see most often has a picture of a handgun. That's useless because if you are carrying unlicensed its unlawful anyway.
