LIVE OAK -- Live Oak Police are telling drivers to move over or slow down! Police agencies along IH-35 from San Antonio to Austin are cracking down on drivers who don't follow the law when it comes to passing emergency vehicles on the shoulder or side of the road.

State law says you must switch lanes or slow down 20 miles per hour below the speed limit when passing a vehicle like a fire truck, ambulance, police officers or tow trucks. Officers are out in force through Nov. 2 to educate and enforce the law.  In the first week of the crackdown in Live Oak, officers issued 46 tickets.

If you're ticketed, it's a class C misdemeanor with up to a $200 fine.

That's great and all, but how about doing something about all the general bad, reckless driving that goes on and endangers everybody, not just personnel on the side of the road? And for heaven's sake, teach these people what a turn signal is.

I agree that the police need to ticket people who do not move over or slow down for emergency vehicles. However, I drive on IH35 every day and the Live Oak police are just sitting in the median with their lights on trapping motorists who do not move over or slow down. They are not giving tickets nor are there any accidents they are clearing. Yesterday 2 accidents almost happened because of this. I have seen this happen for the last 2 weeks. This is wrong and should not be allowed to happen.

It's very difficult to slow down when these belly dumpers from the Eagle Ford Shale are barreling down behind you or even trying to move to the left lane because theyre there as well. I have tried it and almost had an accident.

Tons of people break that law all the time. They need to put that message on those electronic highway signs.
