SAN ANTONIO - Guests staying at a Downtown Travel Lodge had to evacuate their rooms late Friday night after a fire started on the third floor. Some of the people forced out into the cold were in town to watch Saturday’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
The fire broke out around 10 p.m. and crews with the San Antonio Fire Department were able to quickly put it out. However, the occupants of about 60 rooms had to evacuate for a time.
The Travel Lodge management quickly brought guests out of the cold temperatures into rooms on the first floor. Most of the damage was confined to rooms on the second and third floors. No one was injured.
The motel is located at the corner of Avenue B and Broadway. Two rooms were damaged by flames, a few others by water used by firefighters. Assistant Chief Mike Walsh said the motel had plenty of rooms to move displaced guests into.
There was no reason to suspect arson, Walsh said, but arson investigators were brought in anyway to help determine a cause.
