SAN ANTONIO- Everybody hates traffic, but how do San Antonio backups stack up to the rest of the state?  The Texas Department of Transportation has released a list of the 100 most congested roadway segments in the state and the worst area in San Antonio is IH 35 between 1604 and FM 3009 on the northeast side.

Traffic there causes 637,660 hours of delay annually at a cost of $22.46 million. However, it only ranks 31st in the top 100 worst stretches.  Close behind at 32 is US 281 between 1604 and Stone Oak Parkway. Drivers there lose 359,160 hours annually to the tune of $14.16 million.

TxDOT says they could expand both highways from the existing lanes, but that would cost billions of dollars and there's no money available to begin either project.

10 stretches of roadways in Bexar County make the statewide list. Coming in at 33rd worst is IH 35 between 410 and 1604 and IH 35 downtown between IH10 and US 281 makes the list at 35.

IH 10 from 410 to 1604 comes in at 58 on the list and 410 from IH 10 to US 281 is not far behind at number 60.

The most congested area is a portion of IH 35 W in Fort Worth.   To check out where other Bexar County roadways made the list, check out the TxDOT website.

The roads are not the problem, the stupid drivers are.

It doesnt help when people think they are better and smarter than everyone else and keep cutting in line at the 1604 to I-35 loop interchange. I see it all the time. People wait their turn but those that are too good to wait act like they are getting on I-35 South from 1604 but then cut in to the 1604 and I-135 north interchange.

chubrachabra I don't disagree that Selma is part ofthe problem. The bigger problem is the 1604 35 interchange.

Most of the problem on I35 between 1604 and 3009 are the Selma road worriers giving tickets . This slows or stops the traffic and it takes for ever to get going again. TXDOT should stop Selma police from getting on to I35.

Build a private tollway around the bullcrap mess at 35 and 1604 starting at about New Braunfels. People that don't want to sit in traffic and burn up money in gas to get across San Antonio will be glad to pay the few dollars to avoid the mindless herds. I take the tollway around Austin all the time and it's like having a beautiful private highway to yourself. 75 and 80 mph the whole way and beautiful scenery. Let the people who want something for little or nothing sit in traffic jams. Let those willing to pay for what they get have a luxury private highway. It's the future. The days of the gov't "freebees" are over because there are fewer and fewer wage earners to pay the taxes to support everyone else.
