SAN ANTONIO -- Wearing sunglasses to hide swollen, red eyes brought about by hours of crying, Monica Olveda told us she tried many times to get police to stop her son. She feared someone would get hurt, and that’s exactly what she said happened Monday.

"I thought for a minute. Is this real? It was like a dream. I knew it. I knew it," Olveda told us.

Olveda said her son was drinking too much and taking pills. She received a call from him after he was arrested.

"He said 'I killed a boy," and I couldn't breathe," recalled Olveda.

Police charged her son, 27-year-old John Albert Hernandez, with intoxication manslaughter and several counts of intoxication assault after a boy was killed and four other family members hurt in a car crash.

Investigators said Hernandez slammed into the back of a truck carrying the Barrientos family. According to investigators, the truck veered into traffic and collided with a minivan in the 4200 block of Southwest Military Drive.

One of the children inside the truck, 11-year-old Bryan Barrientos, died. His mother and siblings were treated at University Hospital.

Tuesday, students and teachers at Sam Rayburn Middle School mourned the loss of the sixth grader. Monica Olveda offered the family an apology.

"When it happened, I wished I was there to help them. I just wanted to hold them and say I'm sorry," said Olveda.

Olveda said her son is bipolar and refused to take his prescribed medication. He has two boys with his long-time girlfriend, Kim Rios. Rios believes he regrets getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.

"I know he's sitting in jail feeling bad for the little boy's family," Rios said through tears. "It broke their family apart. It broke our family apart. It’s just hard.”

This lady wishes police could stop her son. Lets arm law enforcment officers with RPG's then they can stop a drunk driver and administer justice.

Oh, play the bame game and not blame the drunk? The drunk drivers mom should have used a condom 27 years and 9 months ago. That would have kept this drunk off the road, save this little boy and his family and saved "mom" 27+ years of grief. Never drink and drive!

The family is NOT responsible. He is a grown man people! What was his mother supposed to do? Send him to his room? He was not a teenager, He is a grown man!!! At least she called the cops on him. She did all she could, give the poor woman a freaking break. He has probably been making her life a living hell. I have an alcoholic brother. My mother raised us all the same, he choose a different path. He is impulsive, he has problems with addiction and has caused her endless heartache. He is a screw up, but he is still her son and she loves him. He is an adult, he does what he wants. She doesn't support his habits, or his lifestyle. It is not always the family's fault. By the way FDNY, Laurel Ridge is not free.

How is it the police's responsibility when YOU as his mother should have locked his butt up at Laurel Ridge or some place the moment you realized he was uncontrollable and unwilling to take his meds? As for the gf's comments- let's hope HIS crazy behind DOES feel bad- he willingly got behind the wheel- and KILLED someone. Just because you have a mental illness does NOT give you a free pass on being irresponsible. And if you lack the mental capacity to be responsible then someone in your family needs to be responsible for you, not the police. I'm not sure we'll ever know why folks suffer from mental illness and it's unfortunate that they do, but the bottom line is this man got behind the wheel and a child is dead because SOMEONE wasn't responsible- hopefully our whacked out court system will properly identify whether that was him or his family and not somehow turn this into the System's fault.

Medical conditions do not give justification to drinking and driving manslaughters. This 11 year old will miss out on what could have been his great life because a 27 year old had not made the right dcisions in his. Why do the police have to stop the son anyways? SAPD is not mental institution security. They process the crimes AFTER they occur, not while your son is on the verge of being loony. Sit there and ponder why your mijo didn't turn out like other good kids because you--well--sat there and hoped. Hope is NOT a strategy. It's an accessory to accomplishment.
