SAN ANTONIO -- A two-alarm fire raged through an abandoned two-story building in the 200 block of Broadway Wednesday night. The fire broke out just after 7 p.m., and over 100 hundred firefighters responded.
“I've never seen anything like this, it's just crazy one minute it's so small the next minute it's just this big, “ said Izzy Contreras while watching the building burn.
Heavy fire and smoked could be seen shooting from the roof of the structure. People snapped pictures and watched as firefighters battled the flames from the outside of the building.
People staying at The Old Traveler’s Hotel next door to the fire were evacuated.
"There was no fire involvement there, most of the residents there kinda self-evacuated we did move one unit out, asked them to move out for a little while”, said battalion chief Keith Crusius with the San Antonio Fire Department,
It was unclear how many people were staying inside the hotel, but Crusius said it wasn’t very many. Firefighters stayed outside of the burned building, fearing it might collapse.
No one was injured.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined. A spokesperson for the San Antonio Fire Department said Thursday morning arson investigators are waiting for the okay from code compliance, so they can go in and survey the scene. The spokesperson said they believe the structure is unstable and are unsure at this time if it will need to be demolished.
