SAN ANTONIO – People getting their morning exercise made a gruesome discovery: a man’s body floating in Woodlawn Lake.

A couple walking the track spotted the body around 9:40 Wednesday morning at the west side park lake.

"I saw something floating and I thought it was a dead dog,” parkgoer Trinidad Escamilla said.

But when he and his wife Sylvia got closer, they realized it was actually a human body floating close to the water’s edge and called 911.

"I was thinking it's not right for a body to be floating there,” Trinidad said. “We've got a lot of people, kids, families running and walking."

And those people who did come to exercise found the path blocked with yellow tape as investigators pulled the body from the lake.

"No one saw him get into the water,” Sgt. Javier Salazar with SAPD said. “It appears at this point he's been there at least a couple of days."

Officers investigated the disturbing scene to see if the middle-aged man was a victim of foul play.

The Escamillas stood by, spooked by their discovery.

"This is the day right now – imagine at night,” Sylvia said.

Even as officers picked up the tape and people went back to their workouts, nerves were clearly rattled with so many questions left unanswered.

The Medical Examiner’s office will now try to figure out the man’s identity as well as any other information that might help police.
