SAN ANTONIO -- A man was shot in the head while hunting south of San Antonio early Monday.

Emergency crews received a call from a man around 4:30 a.m. Monday. According to officers at the scene, the man told them he and another man had been out hunting 'varmints' near Interstate 37 & Southton Road, about 15 miles south of San Antonio, when he accidentally shot the other man. Deputies had trouble locating the men but found them after receiving a second call. When crews arrived, the man who had called was holding pressure on the victim's wound.

The victim, 35-year-old Steven Davis, was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) where he underwent surgery. As of Monday afternoon, Davis remained in critical but stable condition.

Well, @GSDlady, your ignorance is showing. At 0430, you can legally and preferably hunt ‘possums, raccoons and ring-tailed cats in Texas. We used to call it “shining” them, when you go out and look for then with a spotlight or flash light. In Louisiana, my dad would also use his hound dogs, which would tree the critters and bay up the hunters. Furthermore, feral hogs are NOT asleep at 0430…they are rooting around in river bottoms and make critter hunting very dangerous, although I don’t think it’s legal to hunt hogs right now. Hunting varmints on these wonderful south Texas spring nights is a good thing to do, and perfectly legal and usually safe. When I first heard this news story, I felt enormous respect for the man who had accidently shot his friend. He stayed by his side, called 911 and waited until help arrived. Now I read in this article that he also held pressure on the wound, which was a very smart and responsible thing to do. It’s possible that one of the gentlemen stumbled, but there is nothing in this to indicate either was foolish or irresponsible. All the idiotic anti-gun, anti-hunter folks out there need to find a brain cell and practice using it. For both Mr. Davis and his hunting buddy, you and your families are in my prayers.

@MCR: Sorry, but you aren't making much sense!!! "6 horas later"???? WTF are you talking about? Don't worry about answering, because it doesn't matter. You can go suck a rotten egg, SS. And, I wasn't actually taking back anything that I'd written, just apologizing that offense was taken to it and explaining some things that one such as you, with no compassion or integrity, would EVER understand. Besides, you're nothing but a useless troll bent on stirring up trouble and controversy, so........... You're not even funny!! And, the harder you try at your pretend "accent", the harder you are to understand. What a useless idiot & joke!!!! TA! TA!

One more thing........I have a family member with a permanent disability from a "like" type incident, and that family member was not at all offended by "funny" comments, understanding why and where some came from...ie: the not "malicious" ones. Life is what you make of it, how you live it, and how much God leads you. Bless all of you. Forgive me if any of you felt insulted because that was not my intention.

@cncrnedcitzen: My apologies. I totally agree with your comment, and feel deservedly chastized. However, I do want to defend myself and some others that don't normally get on here and make hurtful or crass comments. I was in a business for a number of years that dealt with people and families during one of the worst times of their life, and sometimes finding humor somewhere...anywhere...was a dealing mechanism. I know that in personal losses of myself & my family that has come into play. With what we are dealing with in our world and society today and our fears, it's easy to understand the search for the funny or comical in a situation. I may have misread, but I read the article to read that the victim was considered "critical" but the injuries were not life threatening. Somehow, I assumed from what I read that there probably wouldn't be long term problems. Assumptions are inexcusable at times, aren't they?!?!!? Anyway, this story so recently on the heels of the one with the couple rabbit hunting in the middle of the night and him shooting her in the abdomen (supposedly, according to news sources, not life threatening or debilitating to her or the baby she was carrying), one almost has to laugh at the lack of common sense of the individuals involved. This is a natural "dealing" mechanism of the human mind, soul, spirit, whatever. All that being said, I do disagree with your first sentence about this "basest human reaction to tragedy". I totally understand what you're expressing and concerns, and I would never normally be caught dead making light of life threatening circumstances. But, as I said, it wasn't presented as that bad of a circumstance, and self preservation mechanisms of function, acceptance, and being able to deal with things kicked in. I apologize if my remarks hurt anyone. That was NOT my intention. But, at the same time, I ask for understanding and acceptance of having to find a way to deal with life's realities.

It is truly appalling to see the basest human reaction to tragedy. There is no comedy in a life altering injury. It is despicable for not only one, but multiple citizens of San Antonio to find humor at another's expense under these circumstances. For those of you who are mocking the innocent victim of an accident, I hope you realize the ignominy of your actions before the same treatment is ever rendered to you in kind. How horrible would you feel if someone were to publicly ridicule you or your family at a time that you or they are fighting to survive? For shame, San Antonio, for shame. I would also reprimand WOAI for making light of a serious situation. It seems that sensationalism has taken the place of profesionalism and truth in reporting. I guess attracting viewers with mockery and ridicule is more important than strictly telling the news or showing compassion for the injured. WOAI not only mocks the subjects in the story, but also created and permitted this forum to do the same. But, doubt not, San Antonians, that WOAI will do the same when mischance knocks upon your door. You will be the brunt of the joke one day, and know the misery that you inflicted upon the people being mistreated today. To the victim and his family, I wish I speedy recovery and any comfort and solace that my words can convey. I also send what apologies I can for the poeple of San Antonio who have yet to know the devastation of a tragedy of this magnitude and are thus incapable of showing compassion, empathy or sympathy. My prayers are with you.

I do think this is comical. I do not think that these two subjects had any business being out at 4:30 AM with loaded firearms near what is becoming more of a populated area. My main question is Were you drunk? Obviously you did not know what you are doing, as one of you got shot. Someone needs to go play XBox and leave the real guns to those who know proper safety measures. As far as varmints, I am more concerned about two legged thugs than poor animals who are displaced by the human termite.

people get hurt shooting "varmints" all the time but the only problem is most of the time the "varmints" shoot back.

This is absolutely not funny or a joking matter at all. Accidents DO happen and hunting for hogs at 4:30am is prime hunting time. I highly doubt poaching was involved. We're being overtaken by idiots that think horrific accidents are comical. Get real.
