SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A San Antonio man convicted of capital murder in the 2010 death of an Air Force recruit will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
A jury sentenced 23-year-old Lorenzo Leroy Thompson to life in prison without parole for the murder of 26-year-old Vanessa Marie Pitts, who was killed back in April of 2010.
Pitts was pumping gas when Thompson tried to steal her purse. Pitts ran after him and jumped on the stolen pickup truck he was driving in an effort to recover the purse. After swerving to try to shake her from the truck, Thompson drove toward another vehicle to knock her off. Pitts died of the injuries she suffered in the crash.
Prosecutors wanted Thompson to receive the death penalty.
