SAN ANTONIO -- It's happened again. Police say a man entered a home posing as a CPS Energy employee.

The home invasion happened Sunday afternoon in what the utility calls the "west" service area. Police say the man told the woman he needed to cut some trees to clear them out of the way of power lines.

"She let him into the house. As he gained entry, he forced her into the bedroom," explained Officer Matthew Porter of the San Antonio Police Department. "We believe his intention was to assault the victim. A noise spooked him, and he fled the location."

CPS Energy management said police notified them about the man yesterday after the incident.

The man was wearing a fake uniform and driving an unmarked pick-up truck. Monday, the utility company displayed the real uniforms their employees wear and the real marked trucks they drive.

CPS Energy says there are ways to identify their employees and to avoid something like this happening to you:
  • Employees do not ask for access into homes
  • Employees have IDs with names and employee ID numbers.
  • Employees wear CPS Energy logo shirts and drive marked vehicles.
  • You can verify an employee 24/7 by calling 210-353-4000 and giving the employee number. CPS Energy says you can call the number 365 days a year to verify whether or not a person is an employee.

If I am not mistaken, utility companies like CPS, SAWS, etc,"don't solicit" unless one reports trouble. So, if I don't expect or called for a technician, I just won't open the door.

Whether this is a crook or a real CPS person they're all out for your cash. CPS is corrupt in their own right.

The first clue that something just was not right was that the "CPS worker" showed up on SUNDAY !!! They only show up on the weekends if you call them for a downed power line or outage.

I agree with you cents. A person who is not legit isn't really going to allow you to stand there waiting to get through to CPS. They're gonna bust down the door and go with the planned invasion. Unfortunatly the real CPS workers are at a loss on this one. They have to really be careful approaching a house cause the homeowner might have a pistola handy and itchy to use it....

Calling CPS doesn't always work. I had a man come to my door last year, he was not wearing a CPS shirt, I did not see a truck. He wanted to enter my back yard. I asked him to wait while I called CPS to see if he was legit. It took me 45 minutes to get through to someone to give me the ok. I hate to even consider what he could have done in those 45 minutes if he was not on the up and up.
