Man arrested for hauling away cash machine

SAN ANTONIO - A man has been arrested for allegedly dragging off an ATM with more than $76,000 inside.

Police arrested 32-year-old Nathan Paul Davenport for the crime. Officers claim Davenport attached a chain to the ATM and hauled it away using a truck.

Police tracked down the truck to a local dealership, and were able to identify Davenport. He is suspected in several other ATM thefts.

Before retiring I did the structural plans for over 150 Walgreens in Texas with ATMs and I have never understood why the money for these ATM's is not stored under the slab in a secured vault with a tube similar to a drive though bank teller to transmit the money to customers. Then when the machines are stolen there would be of little value to the thief. This would not work everywhere since every building is not for a specific tenant but would stop 95% of these events. It would only add maybe $20,000 to the construction cost.

Read story at 5:30 Sunday morning. No mention of where crime took place, time, etc. Guess I'll have to go to KSAT for the rest of the story.
