SAN ANTONIO -- International food manufacturer Maruchan Inc. is taking steps to open a major manufacturing, warehouse and shipment facility in southwest Bexar County.

The maker of instant ramen noodle soup products wants to construct a 500,000 square foot facility on approximately 60 acres at the Medio Creek Business Park near San Antonio.

"The Maruchan Inc. facility represents tremendous movement in our efforts to aggressively pursue economic development projects that will benefit the southwest region," says Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff. "With a capital investment of approximately $325 million, this project will have a positive and lasting impact on our county."

Bexar County, the City of San Antonio, and the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation (SAEDF) are working to finalize incentive agreements with Maruchan.

The SAEDF says an estimated 500 jobs will be created as a part of the development.

"This is a very unique, high-impact economic development project." says SAEDF Chairman Henry Cisneros. "The huge investment, along with hundreds of new jobs, will have a tremendous impact on the local economy."

Maruchan hopes to begin construction by the fall and open in April of 2014. Hiring for the plant is expected to begin in late 2013.

I suggest that Nelson Wolfe and Chico Rodriquez locate the factory in one of their own neighborhoods. Southwest Bexar County was once a quiet, pristine place full of live oak trees, swimming holes and fishing ponds and a strong sense of community. It was a great place to raise one's kids. Now, it has become a dumping ground for Wolfe's and Rodriquez's little 'projects,' like the Union Pacific rail yard. The two politicians claim that the economic development projects Wolfe is is aggressively pursuing in Southwest Bexar County will benefit those of us who live here. Really? Last I heard, Maruchan will be paying minimum wage to the vast majority of their workers. And the last endeavor (Toyota) in which Wolfe made the same claim didn't help us either. No one out here is being hired by Toyota, only transplants and north-siders. Nothing but noise, dust, and increased traffic for those of us who live and pay taxes out here. And to add insult to injury, Toyota was excused from paying property tax for quite some time. And the Union Pacific rail yard that was suppose to make life so wonderful for us? All it did was increase truck traffic, road noise, dust, and constant horn blasts from trains all hours of the day and night, seven days a week. Funny, we get no responses from the guys who "want to make life better for us" when we make requests for a quiet zone. I guess that *little project* wouldn't be "good for us" in their opinions. We now have a prison, a rail yard, an auto manufacturing plant, and soon, a food plant. Thanks to Wolfe, Chico Rodriguez, and others like them who DO NOT live out here, we are becoming a corporate dumping ground, much like the less-privileged areas of Houston. Gentlemen, at the very least, if you're going to continue destroying our community, at least refrain from telling us it will be "good for us." That's an insult to our intelligence. It's good for you, and for the corporations in whose pockets you live.

It appears that a majority of these jobs will be at minimum wage. I do not see the benefit in giving this company massive tax breaks as well as other incentives to provide minimum wages. Also, what will be the factories water useage requirements. Bill Millers has signs up at many of their restaurants hiring at 9.00 per hour. The oil fields are paying close to twice that uif one qualifies and can make the time commitments. Do we really need another parasite minimum wage employer in the area? Sorry, I am not exited at all.
