SAN ANTONIO -- Firefighters say a faulty water heater may be to blame for a fire that left an elderly woman and her dog out in the cold early Thursday.

The fire happened around 2:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Koepke near S. Flores on the South Side. According to officials, the woman made it out of the home safely, but her dog named "lucky" had to be rescued by firefighters.

Officials say the kitchen in the home was destroyed. The woman and dog will be staying with family members.
