SAN ANTONIO -- Since January 1st, the San Antonio Police Department has reported 23 vehicle burglaries at the Planet Fitness parking lot off 1604 and Potranco.
"Obviously you know they found a spot that works for them," said gym member Scott Wallace. Wallace told News 4 his truck was broken into last Wednesday around 3:30 in the afternoon. "They smashed the passenger window, cleaned out the center console, everything in the back," added Wallace.
Wallace went on to say everything was hidden inside his truck, but it didn't matter. "I just want something done so it doesn't happened to other people," said Wallace.
News 4 Crime Tracker Specialist Gilbert De La Portilla says gym parking lots are easy targets for break-ins. Portilla says thieves know a person will be inside working out for a couple of hours, leaving their car unattended.
He says most people go from work to "work out" so they will have laptops and other electronics with them, and sometimes leave them in their cars so they don't get stolen from a locker room.
Other hot spots De La Portilla says people should keep an eye out for are malls and other shopping centers, and restaurants along busy freeways. So be on the lookout, lock your doors, and don't leave anything in your car.
Planet Fitness tells us the company is in the process of adding more security measures to the gym on Potranco, including putting up security cameras outside and adding more lighting.
The company is also working with San Antonio Police, and believe the thieves may be driving a green SUV.
