SAN ANTONIO - Local Vietnam Veteran Robert Weeks is celebrating the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell". Weeks is the President of the local chapter of American Veterans For Equal Rights.
Weeks served in the United States Army for 20 years. "I've lived more or less my life in a closet for the 20 years, like a lot of service members did, " added Weeks.
Week said while he was in the military no one knew he was gay. Weeks lived a traditional life, got married and had a family. Weeks went on to say he was nervous every time he was called into his Commander's office. "You have all kinds of things running through your head, you know who did I look at wrong, " added Weeks.
After retiring from the service weeks came out about his sexuality. "I sat up one night and said well it's about time you get honest with you, " replied Weeks. Weeks is glad other service members don't have to keep their sexuality a secret if they don't want to.
Despite the repeal of "Don't Ask Don't Tell", Weeks said it's going to take some time to set in.
"It's not going to happen overnight, "added Weeks.
